Registration: The last day to change your winter quarter schedule without any fees is January 11.

Building Permits: Those of you with building keys should pick up a building permit from me in the front office. This is required to renew every quarter and gives you permission to be in the building after hours.

Colloquium: will start next week!

Dava Sobel Lecture: Many of you have heard that we have Dava Sobel on campus next week. Dava wrote the books Longitude and Galileo's Daughter. http://www.davasobel.com/. We will have several events planned, some which include undergraduates. More information will follow this week, but I wanted to give you a heads up about the large public lecture on Tues, Jan. 13 at 6:30pm in Kane 130.

NASA summer opportunities: 2009 Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Astrobiology

The SETI Institute is pleased to announce that applications are now
open for the 2009 REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates)
program in Astrobiology. Undergraduate students in fields such as
astronomy, biology, geology, chemistry, and physics are invited to
apply to spend 10 weeks in the San Francisco Bay area working on a
scientific research project in the field of astrobiology. Students
receive a stipend, travel, and living expenses. Applications are due
by February 2, 2009.

NASA Ames Academy for Space Exploration

The Academy is a summer research internship that focuses on
leadership, team building, and conducting applied research with NASA
scientists in science, information technology and engineering. The
program is a 10 week immersive summer internship for undergraduate
juniors, seniors and first year graduate students. The internship
includes a stipend from the State Space Grant Office up to $5000,
housing, food stipend, transportation and travel expenses.

NASA Must Internship Invitation: Portal to Opportunity

*The MUST Project is Accepting Applications NOW! *

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is sponsoring
the *Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology* (MUST) Project
and is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 academic year. The
MUST Project offers support to undergraduate students majoring in
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
Program participants receive a scholarship, NASA internship, mentoring
and access to a wealth of professional development opportunities.

*Project offerings include:*

*A one-year competitive scholarship*

covering up to one-half of tuition and fees, not to exceed $10,000 per
academic year. the scholarship is renewable through the scholar's junior
year provided that all eligibility criteria are continually satisfied,
*A 10-week paid summer internship* at one of ten nationwide NASA
Centers. Scholars receive a $6,000 stipend plus transportation and
location allowance not to exceed $1,000,
*Support from MUST Professional and Academic Support System (PASS)*
providing scholars with an online student community and professional
development/leadership training, and
*Invaluable resources, insight, and experience to further STEM education
and career aspirations from the MUST Consortium,* which is comprised of
three member organizations: the Hispanic College Fund (HCF), the United
Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP), and the
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

* Must be a U.S. citizen from underserved and underrepresented
groups (i.e., women, minorities, and person with disabilities) in
STEM disciplines, including those residing in rural and

* Be a college freshman, sophomore or junior and hold a full-time
academic status at the an accredited college or university (in the
U.S. or U.S. territory) for the 2009-2010 academic year,

* Must earn and maintain a cumulative grade point averal of no less
than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted), and

* must be enrolled in STEM disciplines whose major are aligned with
NASA's core competencies (physical science, technology,
engineering, or mathematics degree).

Glenn Research Center Hosts Broad Spectrum of NASA Higher Education Programs:

Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, Ohio) is designated as NASA lead Center for Aeropropulsion from subsonic to hypersonic speed. In this capacity it is Glenn's role to develop, verify, and transfer aeropropulsion technologies to U.S. industry. Goddard Space Flight Center Education Programs:

Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD) has set a goal of 50% minority participation among its highly competitive interns in its education programs. We seek help with summer intern programs. The main on-line application deadline for next summer is January 16, 2009. Our web based application (to the collection of programs) is at http://university.gsfc.nasa.gov/. It includes a list of over 100 project opportunities," for summer 2009, from which the applicant selects his or her favorites. Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX) has a robust education program and participates in many Agency student programs. Student Opportunity: Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience:

Applications are being accepted for INSPIRE's online community from 9th to 12th grade students through December 31, 2008. The community provides NASA-related resources and educational activities, allows for students to interact with other students, ask questions and share knowledge. Once selected into the online community, students may compete for the unique grade appropriate summer experiences ranging from a 1 day VIP tour and workshops, a 2 week on-campus collegiate experience, and paid summer internships.
