We have a busy week with science writer, Dava Sobel on campus giving lots of different talks. We are also gearing up for our Astronomy career workshop on January 24. I strongly encourage you all to attend this career workshop specifically for astronomy undergrads.
Here is a list of events going on for your calendar:
Dava Sobel Visit:
January 13 (Tuesday) 6:30pm: Public lecture in Kane 130. Dava Sobel will give a talk on "Galileo and the International Year of Astronomy". Seating is first come, first served.
January 14 (Wednesday) 12:30: Astro lunch in Phys/Astr C520. Dava Sobel will give a more intimate talk to our department. Seating is fairly limited, so please arrive early.
January 14 (Wednesday) 2:30-4pm: Student meet and greet in Phys/Astr C341. Dava Sobel would like to be available to meet with undergrad and grad students during this time. You can ask questions about what life is like as a science writer or how she entered this career. Light refreshments will be served.
Colloquium: This Thursday at 4pm in Phys/Astr A102, Toby Burnett (UW Physics) will give a talk on "Gamma-ray Astronomy with the Fermi Large Area Telescope". Join us at 3:45pm in the foyer for coffee, tea and cookies.
Astronomy career workshop: January 24 from 10am-2pm in Phys/Astr C520. This is for you!! Guests will include Vince Santo Pietro from Shorecrest High School, Kristine Washburn from Everett Community College, and Rich Lenish from the Museum of Flight. The purpose of the workshop is to explore possibilities for employment if you have a Bachelors or Masters degree in Physics/Astronomy. Food will be provided!
Undergraduate Research Symposium: This spring event is open to all undergraduates doing research. You can give an oral presentation or present a poster on your research. The deadline to apply is February 20. You can learn more about the symposium here: http://www.washington.edu/research/urp/symp/index.html. We have had a great history of astronomy undergraduates participating in the symposium. This is a great opportunity to practice your presentations for a research conference or to show off to your friends and family what you have been up to.
Page O'Announcements: http://pageoannouncements.blogspot.com/ I posted some Astronomy specific REU opportunities today, so be sure to take a look.
Feel free to stop in any time.
Best,
Sarah
